What is Operation Safe Driver Week 2021?

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) Operation Safe Driver Week takes place from July 11-17, 2021. This year the theme will focus on speeding. CVSA’s initiative aims to educate driver’s about ways to share the roads safely and reduce risky and unsafe driver behaviors.  The program’s one-week enforcement and education campaign will have law enforcement personnel on the lookout for commercial vehicle drivers and passenger vehicle drivers engaging in risky driving behaviors in or around a commercial motor vehicle.

The program chose speeding as this year’s theme because despite the drop in roadway travel last year due to the pandemic, traffic fatalities increased nationwide.  “Data shows that traffic stops and interactions with law enforcement help reduce problematic driving behaviors,” said Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) President Sgt. John Samis with the Delaware State Police. “By making contact with drivers during Operation Safe Driver Week, law enforcement personnel aim to make our roadways safer by targeting high-risk driving behaviors.”

Impact on Drivers

The program focuses specifically on drivers because their actions – whether it’s something they did or didn’t do, like speeding or not paying attention to the road – are responsible for most crashes.  Research shows that interactions with law enforcement do impact drivers’ behaviors.  This initiative aims to improve the behavior of all drivers operating in an unsafe manner in  and around commercial motor vehicles through educational and traffic enforcement strategies

Tips for Drivers and Carriers

It’s important to practice and encourage a culture of safety all year round, but here are some helpful tips for Operation Safe Driver Week:

  • Make sure you are alert and well-rested when driving
  • Always wear your seatbelt
  • Follow the common Traffic Laws
  • Obey signs, signals, and other traffic control devices.
  • Do not engage in dangerous driving behaviors like aggressive or reckless driving, distracted driving, following too closely, improper lane changes, use common sense, etc.
  • Most importantly, do not speed

Tips for Shippers and Brokers

Operation Safe Driver Week can limit capacity and cause transit delays. Here are some things shippers and brokers should keep in mind and what they can do to mitigate possible issues during this week:

  • It may take longer to source trucks during this time, so factor in longer lead times.
  • Build flexibility into your delivery dates
  • When possible, adjust your shipment pickup to take place either before or after this week.
  • Evaluate your orders and determine if you can hold the non-critical shipment orders until after the safety initiative ends, and expedited options with time-definite services for if the load is critical.
  • See how ZUUM’s Logistics Super Platform can help you.

CVSA’s Operation Safe Driver Program was created to help reduce the number of crashes involving  commercial motor vehicles and passenger vehicles due to unsafe driving behaviors. The initiative aims to combat the number of deaths and injuries from crashes. Identified unsafe drivers will be pulled over and issued a citation or warning.

ZUUM Transportation Named Supply & Demand Chain Executive’s 2021 Top Supply Chain Project

Supply & Demand Chain Executive selects ZUUM Transportation as a recipient of the Top Supply Chain Projects Award for 2021.

The Top Supply Chain Projects (formerly known as SDCE 100) spotlights successful and innovative transformation projects that deliver bottom-line value to small, medium and large enterprises. These projects show how supply chain solution and service providers help their customers and clients achieve excellence and prepare their supply chains for success.

“The supply chain industry has been challenged with a host of supply chain disruptions over the last year. Yet, the winners on this list continued to re-tool and innovate,” says Marina Mayer, editor for Supply & Demand Chain Executive and Food Logistics. “Whether it be moving a customer to a cloud-based solution or implementing a more sustainable shipping option, these top supply chain projects reflect the supply chain industry’s strength and resilience to overcome disruptions and work better, smarter and more efficiently in the years ahead.”

ZUUM’s PaaS and SaaS-deployed shipper solution, BEYOND TMS is the project being recognized. Digital capacity aggregation lowers freight costs for shippers by expanding their carrier options. Workflow automations reduce substantial time spent on manual labor intensive processes and reduces the number of systems. Freight network digitization enhances communication and coordination with freight partners. For shippers, ZUUM also finds dark capacity and makes this available to partners, turning freight from a cost center to a revenue center. Carbon footprint reports calculate the company’s carbon emission and visualize trends, allowing companies to offset their environmental impact and earn tax credits. The Dynamic RFP tool allows companies to seamlessly manage multiple RFP events, find the most efficient carriers for their dedicated lanes, and remain flexible in volatile markets. With BEYOND TMS, companies can identify new areas of opportunity for efficiency, productivity, and cost-savings.

CEO of ZUUM Transportation, Mustafa Azizi highlights ZUUM’s efforts to enable opportunities for growth among shippers. “This year has brought new challenges and magnified long-standing inefficiencies throughout the industry. But where adversity appears, innovation follows. I’m proud of how fast my team has managed to develop and launch these new tools that allow companies to take control of their destiny and succeed.” says Azizi.

Dangerous Weather Conditions Reach Eastern U.S.

Truckers travelling throughout the Eastern U.S., particularly those east of the Mississippi River, should be wary of potentially dangerous weather conditions in the week ahead. For the last week, there have been heavy rains falling in states  including Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota. Due to the storms, some areas received several inches of rain, which has poured into the Mississippi River and created flash flood warnings.

Flash flooding has occurred as of Monday morning, June 7, 2021, but the National Weather Service has added Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas to the list of affected regions. Truckers who will be going through these parts of the country should stay careful, alert, and follow the recommended safety guidelines to ensure their safety.

FreightWaves reports:

For the second half of the week, heavy rain will finally move away from these waterlogged areas, heading northward. Portions of the middle Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee valleys, as well as the Northeast, will get drenched late Tuesday through Friday. There’s a chance of localized flash flooding in these areas too, including places such as Memphis, Chattanooga, Knoxville and Nashville, Tennessee; Lexington and Louisville, Kentucky; Indianapolis; Columbus, Ohio; Pittsburgh and Philadelphia; Baltimore; Washington; as well as most of Virginia and North Carolina.

Locally-intense thunderstorms could produce severe winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes on Monday from the Dakotas and northern Minnesota to Texas and the Ark-La-Tex region. This also includes the Denver and Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan areas. The severe threat on Tuesday will mainly be from the Dakotas to Montana, eastern Wyoming and western Nebraska.

According to the Center for Disease Control, “Each year, more deaths occur due to flooding than from any other thunderstorm related hazard […] over half of all flood-related drownings occur when a vehicle is driven into hazardous flood water. The next highest percentage of flood-related deaths is due to walking into or near flood waters. People underestimate the force and power of water. Many of the deaths occur in cars swept downstream.”

Because it has been raining in such high amounts the last few days, the ground is saturated, meaning the soil is full of water already. Any extra will run off and lead to flash floods more quickly than you would expect.Truck drivers should aim to avoid unsafe storm and flood conditions at all costs.

A Dallas water rescue team that is currently on standby for people who get caught in the waters has these important safety tips for driving through heavy storm or flood regions:

  • Check your route before you get in the car for any closures; avoid being on your phone while driving.

  • As the rain picks up, slow down and drive with caution (hazard lights are not necessary).
  • If you see any water on the road, take an alternative route or wait it out; often areas can clear up in an hour or two.
  • Water as shallow as 20 to 24 inches can swamp your car in a matter of seconds and sweep you away. It’s dangerous even for people in a large truck or SUV.

For more information, visit the NWS website here and make sure to consistently keep watch on the weather reports. Drive cautiously and put your safety first!

What Biden’s Infrastructure Plan Means for the Logistics & Transportation Industry

Logistics & Transportation are a vital part of any economy. From supply planning and analytics to over-the-road transport and final mile delivery, every aspect of business is affected by these business sectors. However, these sectors cannot perform at maximum efficiency without a modern, robust, and functional infrastructure around them.

Infrastructure has long been a focal point of debate for commercial, residential, and social reasons. When it comes to logistics and transportation, nearly everyone agrees that more infrastructure is better.

With the Biden administration working hard on a bipartisan infrastructure bill totaling $2 trillion, this is the costliest infrastructure plan since the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956. With that, there are many implications for the logistics and transportation industry.

What’s in the Bill?

Of the $2 trillion, approximately “$571 billion in additional transportation spending over current federal levels”. This includes improvements to interstates, highways, and even local roads and bridges. Other funds will be allocated towards improving airports and railways (freight and passenger), as well as waterways and ports. Still other funds will be put towards electric vehicle incentives and disaster mitigation.

There are plenty of concrete goals outlined in the plan. The administration promises that it will modernize 20,000 miles of highways and main streets, as well as fixing 10 most important bridges in the country, on top of 10,000 smaller bridges that need repair.

The bill also aims to create a network of 500,000 electric-vehicle chargers by 2030. As the truck manufacturers begin to embrace electric and hybrid vehicles, this could be a major benefit for the industry in the coming years.

What to Expect from the Bill

While the bill is still only a proposal, it seems to come closer to passing on a daily basis. The Biden administration will likely have to make some concessions to Republicans, who argue that some items, such as improvements to home health care, are not part of infrastructure. However, it is mostly agreed upon that the nation’s infrastructure does need improvement, and that it will be rather expensive.

No matter what concessions are made, it is highly likely that plenty of funding will be given to highways, roads, bridges, and even broadband internet. This means quite a bit for the transportation and logistics industries, who rely heavily on all of these to carry out their core functions.

Improved roads mean less traffic and quicker travel times, allowing trucks to deliver shipments with greater efficiency. Delays caused by bridge outages or natural disasters will be reduced, and trucks won’t sustain as much damage due to sub-par roads and conditions. The delivery aspect alone is a big deal for an industry that has had to deal with antiquated infrastructure for decades.

Even broadband coverage can be a major benefit, as back-office logistics workers and systems need 24/7 connectivity to perform their jobs optimally. Automated transportation management and load tendering systems will benefit from improved broadband, allowing the overall supply chain to run more smoothly.

While there are plenty of valid concerns surrounding the infrastructure plan, the logistics and transportation industry should be satisfied with many of the items that will provide advantages for them.

CES 2021 Goes Virtual

Now that 2020 is behind us and we are at the start of the new year, we are all excited to embrace the rising waves of innovation that are sure to come from this year’s CES event. With the first convention taking place all the way back in 1967, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), is an annual technology fair hosted by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) to showcase companies and products that feature groundbreaking innovation. There is a diverse selection of transformative products that made their debut at CES in the past, including the VCR, HDTV, satellite radio, the Microsoft Xbox, and 3D printers. This year, organizers announced their first completely digital CES event, held from Jan. 11 – Jan. 14, 2021. The convention is typically held in Las Vegas but made adjustments adapt to the new reality spurred by the Coronavirus pandemic.

This is what the CTA had to say in a press release announcing their switch to a virtual event:

“The new format will allow participants to hear from technology innovators, see cutting-edge technologies and the latest product launches, and engage with global brands and startups from around the world. […] CES 2021 will be a new immersive experience, where attendees will have a front row seat to discover and see the latest technology. This highly personalized experience will bring a global event to the comfort and safety of your home or office. […] We plan to return to Las Vegas for CES 2022, combining the best elements of a physical and digital show.”

Rather than physical meetings and in-person displays, CES 2021 has totally reconstructed their platform to offer the best of the tech industry in a way that remains safe and convenient for all of those involved. As the active workforce has predictably shrunk in response to COVID-19, new technologies are bound to focus on the limitations that have subsequently made themselves known. The influence of the pandemic can be seen clearly in some of the technologies that were showcased this year.

From gaming company Razer comes Project Hazel, an auto-sterilizing N95 face mask that impressively features wireless charging and voice-amp technology. Alongside were new and improved robotic models of existing products that could take on risky tasks.  Cleaning, for instance, could expose a person to the virus. Specifically, LG introduced their UV-C robot, an autonomous technology that disinfects surfaces and has been confirmed to be rolled out in schools, healthcare facilities, and workplaces later this year. Both of these products highlight a focus on reducing the risk of droplet transmission.

Another trend that is more unique to this year’s event is the merging of the home and work life. Social-distancing measures have created an influx of technologies that enhance a stay-at-home work environment. X-Chair’s X-HMT is described by the company as “an Ergonomic Massage Chair for Home and Work.” Meanwhile, Dell unveiled their Latitude laptops with an automated physical shutter for the webcam, an innovation likely stemming from occurrences where people forget to check that their camera function is off when it is not being used..

News website ZDNet identifies health, wellness, and workplace safety as the number one trend for players in the tech industry to pay close attention to. They predict the workforce will return to “a new normal marked by more hybrid working environments, increased reliance on e-commerce and delivery-based services, growth in the use of physical and mental health monitoring devices, and lots of new tech to help people safely come together in person.”

Although this year’s convention has come to a close, it has ushered in technologies that would have been strange to consider as essential a year prior. Touchless tech, ultraviolet disinfectors, and air purifiers may have jumped to the forefront, but gaming tables, sunglasses that stream your favorite shows, and many more fun, new innovations have come out this year that keep us inspired.
