In order to become an independent freight agent in the U.S., you must be at least 18 years of age, have legal authorization to work in the U.S., have a minimum of 2 years experience in freight sales (preferred), have an existing book of business (preferred), as well as have a laptop/desktop and regular access to internet connection.
